Instagram will now limit your reach if you don't label an AI-generated profile

Instagram announced on August 31, 2026 that it's renaming its "AI creator" label to "AI-generated profile" and, more consequentially, will now reduce the reach of accounts that feature an AI-generated person as their identity without disclosing it. Apply the label correctly and there's no penalty at all; skip it on a qualifying profile and distribution suffers. The scope is narrower than the headline suggests, and getting that scope right matters before assuming it applies to your channel.

What actually triggers the rule

The label applies specifically to profiles whose central subject is an AI-generated person, the kind of account built to look and feel like it belongs to a real individual. It does not apply to general AI use on an otherwise ordinary account: photo editing, caption polishing, or graphics made with AI tools don't trigger anything here. Instagram's own explanation frames the motivation plainly: users were discovering that profiles they'd assumed were real people were entirely synthetic, and wanted a reliable way to tell the difference.

What's in scope, and what isn't

Account typeLabel required?
A synthetic persona presented as the account's real identityYes
A channel-branded, non-personified faceless accountNo
A real creator's account using AI for editing or graphicsNo
An AI-generated spokesperson account with no real person behind itYes

How this fits the broader pattern

This is a narrower, platform-specific move in the same direction as YouTube's automatic AI-content labeling and the disclosure obligations in the EU AI Act: platforms are converging on requiring disclosure specifically where AI content could pass as human, identity and endorsement, not content production methods generally. It's the same line our FTC AI disclosure guide already draws between identity disclosure and ordinary production disclosure.

Where Thothium fits

Thothium is a production tool for a real channel making real videos, not a system for building a synthetic human profile meant to pass as a real person, so the identity question this rule targets doesn't come up in normal use. It is in free alpha, and the form below gets you a key.

Frequently asked questions

Does this affect my faceless YouTube channel if I also post to Instagram?

Only if the Instagram profile itself features an AI-generated person as its identity, an entirely synthetic persona presented as if it were a real individual. Posting narrated, faceless explainer content to Instagram from a channel-branded, non-personified account isn't the target of this rule.

What counts as "featuring an AI-generated person"?

The profile's central subject: a synthetic human presented as the account's face or persona, the kind of profile that could pass as a real person's account. Using AI for photo editing, caption writing, or graphic design on an otherwise ordinary brand or channel account does not trigger the label requirement.

What actually happens if I skip the label on a qualifying profile?

Reduced reach, per Instagram's own description of the policy. Applying the label correctly carries no penalty at all; a profile can openly be AI-generated and still get normal distribution, as long as it says so.

Is this the same as the labeling requirements YouTube or the EU already have?

Related but distinct. YouTube auto-labels realistic AI video content regardless of platform or intent; the EU AI Act requires disclosure for AI-generated content reaching EU viewers under a broader transparency mandate. This is Instagram-specific, narrower in scope, and tied specifically to profile identity rather than individual pieces of content.
